Around the world on a motorbike For most motorcyclists, it's not enough to just ride around town. Before long, the urge to go faster and faster and further afield takes over and they succumb to the lure of the open road. Riding motorbikes isn't just about hitting top speed. It's also about taking your time, slowly swallowing the miles, cruising the roads, letting yourself go wherever the road takes you, not worrying about where you have to go and enjoying the ride. You'll know this story from the TV show that aired in our country called Around the World in a Machine. The book provides a deeper and more open look at the often harrowing journey on two wheels , albeit with a support team at your back. The Long Journey South The second adventure of the well-known acting duo, this time through Africa. Cherley Boorman reports: I remember how it started. It was late one Friday night in October 2004. We were in our old office on Bulwer Street. There were boxes and pieces of paper everywhere, and all the equipment was gone. We stood there for a few minutes just thinking. This is where our whole "Around the World on a Motorcycle" journey began. This is where we planned it all, checked the maps; this is where we first saw the bikes. It was over. We'd gone around the world. It was a huge journey. An epic adventure. But now it was over. The maps were still on the walls and we were standing in front of them again. Ewan winked at me. "What do you say, Charley?" "I don't know." "South Africa, or maybe India?" I looked at him, "How about a drive through Africa?" The wanderlust of two adventurers, Ewan McGregor and Chaley Boorman, had not subsided after their sensational round-the-world trip in 2004. After visiting UNICEF in Africa, it was clear they had to return to get a closer look at this remarkable continent. And so they embarked on a 24,000-kilometre adventure, encountering some of the most difficult terrain and the friendliest people in the world. Driving through spectacular landscapes, often in extreme temperatures, Ewan and Charley faced the toughest tests of their lives. With characteristic humour, they describe the dramas, dangers and sheer delight of another ride together, this time through a continent full of wonder and miracles. Eighteen countries. Twenty-four thousand kilometres. Two motorcyclists. One amazing adventure... Race to Dakar We were somewhere in the office and our book Around the World on a Motorbike had just been brought into the room. There was real excitement. We both closed our eyes and covered them with our hands and the book was placed on the desk. And then: ta da! There it was, and there we were, standing proudly on the cover like two explorers of yore. Our first book. It was a first for both of us, and we were both screaming at each other. "Wow," we said. "Look at that... that picture stretches across the cover." "Awesome. "We flipped through it in silence for a while, looking at the group photos and reading short bits. A feeling of pride filled my chest when Charley suddenly said, "Oh, fuck." "What?" I asked. "It says here that I'm going to Dakar in 2006."
