approx.340 stra A5, paperback Foreword Ewan McGregor We were in an office somewhere and our book had just been brought into the room. There was real excitement. We both closed our eyes and covered them with our hands and the book was placed on the desk. And then: ta da! There it was, and there we were, standing proudly on the cover like two explorers of yore. Our first book. It was a first for both of us, and we were both screaming at each other. "Wow," we said. "Look at that... that picture stretches across the cover." "Cool." We flipped through it in silence for a while, looking at group photos and reading short bits. A feeling of pride filled my chest when Charley suddenly said, "Oh, fuck." "What?" I asked. "It says here that I'm going to Dakar in 2006." My friend Charley had been riding motorcycles since he was seven years old, which made him something of a hero in my eyes. His riding had always been very good - whether he was on the circuit or just riding around town - but he needed to improve. A lot better. On the trip described in Around the World on a Motorcycle, I followed him as he led me through some of the rougher roads, and it's true to say that we both got better. The terrain that tested us in Kazakhstan would have been a piece of cake had we encountered it later in Siberia. There were times when we both felt pleased with ourselves. After such sections, we would take off our helmets, huge, dusty smiles visible underneath, and then relive moments of motorcycle perfection in our memories. A name was always used when describing these experiences. It wasn't to describe some off-road riding technique (certainly not in my case), but the feeling of it. When it all came together, the bike seemed to disappear underneath you and you felt like you were flying, no thoughts or decisions about which track to take, what gear to shift into, everything was automatic and left you so free to enjoy the real blending in and excitement. Dakar moments. I don't know whether or not Charley actually decided to race the world's most gruelling rally when, in a fit of sovereignty, he told our editor moments after arriving in New York: "Yeah, next time I'm doing the Dakar." But when he saw it printed on the front cover of our book, he more than met the challenge. Over the course of the next year, I saw him change and saw him less and less as he immersed himself in a demanding training schedule. I'd never seen him so determined, never before had he immersed himself in anything like this. He really surprised people with his riding and his passion for this new, terrifying challenge. Many of his friends and family members - including myself - were worried and nervous for him. The training was really tough and we all knew about the life-threatening dangers he could encounter during the race. I know that Charley himself was scared that last week before the race, but he never tried to back down from the task that loomed before him. I was many miles away when that race started in Lisbon in January 2006, but I know that, along with many others, my prayers found him sweating at the start line, engine roaring and heart pounding in his throat... "GO, CHARLEY... GO!" Ewan McGregor, July 2006
